Dr. Michael A. McMann, MD, FAAO
Ophthalmologist - Eye Physician and Surgeon
Dr. McMann is a
Board Certified
Ophthalmologist
and a Fellowship Trained Surgeon in Cornea, External Disease &
Refractive Surgery. He has over 10 years of experience in
Ophthalmology and brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise
into his new practice. After graduating with a degree in
engineering from
Clemson University, he attended and graduated from The
Pritzker School of Medicine at The University of Chicago
which is consistently ranked as one of the
Top 15 Medical Schools
in the United States by
US News & World Report. Following his graduation from
Medical School, he entered Active Duty service in the US Army
where he spent 8 years in practice as a US Army Physician and
Ophthalmologist. Dr. McMann did his formal Ophthalmology
Internship and Residency at
Madigan Army Medical Center
in Fort Lewis, Washington which
is the largest and busiest Ophthalmology Service in the US Army.
During Dr. McMann’s service as a US Army
physician, he played an integral role in developing the
Warfighter Refractive Eye Surgery Program. at Madigan Army
Medical Center in Fort Lewis, Washington. As one of the
founders of Madigan’s laser center, Dr. McMann had LASIK
performed on his own eyes by his friend and colleague, Dr.
Vernon Parmley, in June 2002. As a teaching staff member
at Madigan Army Medical Center, Dr. McMann had the high honor of
being awarded the Golden Apple Award in 2002. The Golden
Apple Award is awarded by the residents to the best teaching
staff in the Ophthalmology Residency Program. Dr. McMann
was transferred to Fort Benning, Georgia in the summer of
2003. While at Fort Benning, Georgia, he continued to play
an active role in the
Warfighter Refractive Eye Surgery Program
by providing
refractive surgery to soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division.
In June, 2005, Dr. McMann left the US Army with a full honorable
discharge in order to pursue further Fellowship training.
In July 2005, Dr. McMann began Fellowship Training in Cornea,
External Disease & Refractive Surgery at
Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. The Fellowship
Training at
Emory University is world renowned. As part of this
Fellowship Training, Dr. McMann became skilled in advanced
corneal transplant surgeries including the new Descemet’s
Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty also known as DSEK or DSAEK.
Dr. McMann also became skilled in advanced cataract surgery
techniques to include the new multifocal, toric, and phakic
intraocular lenses (IOL) commonly referred to as Premium IOL’s.
He also learned advanced refractive surgery techniques and
diagnosis as part of
Emory’s
Refractive Surgery Center. As part of his Fellowship
Training, he participated in the evaluation and treatment of
complicated cases referred in from other Ophthalmologists
throughout the country.
Following his Fellowship Training, Dr. McMann relocated to O’ahu,
Hawai’i in August 2006 where he plans to remain for the duration
of his career. His wife, Leah, is the only Pediatric
Urologist at Tripler Army Medical Center and is active duty
within the US Army. Dr. Leah McMann is Filipino and has
many roots here in the Hawai’i community as her parents lived on
O’ahu for many years and they have now retired here. While the McMann Eye Institute
was in the planning and development stages, Dr. McMann was
working as a full time contract Ophthalmologist at Tripler Army
Medical Center until July 2008. While at Tripler, Dr. McMann remained
very surgically active and has played a key operative role at
Tripler’s
Warfighter Refractive Eye Surgery Program. Dr. McMann
performed many cornea transplants at Tripler, and he was the
first physician to ever perform a Descemet’s Stripping
Endothelial Keratoplasty at Tripler Army Medical Center.
To date, Dr. McMann has performed Refractive Surgery on nearly
3,000 soldiers' eyes. He has also
performed LASIK on many physicians and their spouses making him
the trusted choice for Refractive Surgery amongst his peers.
He’s excited about opening the McMann Eye Institute and being
able to bring his expertise and many years of experience in all
aspects of Ophthalmology to the island of O’ahu and the state of
Hawai’i.
Recently, Dr. McMann was named the “Best of Leeward Oahu
2009 in Laser Vision Correction,” for the second year in
a row, by the United States Local
